King's Road (Kongevegen over Filefjell)

Overview

Hiking on the King’s Road is ideal for hikers looking for trails without technical difficulties, as it leads along the old road that was built in 1793 for horses and carts travelling between eastern and western Norway. Follow the path of Norway’s past monarchs as you traverse picturesque landscapes, from serene mountains to well-preserved stave churches. Immerse yourself in the vibrant colors and contrasts, thunderous waterfalls, and charming villages.

Description

One of the most famous parts of Kongevegen is Vindhella, which starts behind the Burgund Stave Church. The name derives by virtue of royal edicts which called for the construction - and maintenance - of a road to connect Oslo and Bergen. The trail was first constructed in the 1790s with further upgrading in the 1800s and it is still possible to see the difference between the older trail (steeper and narrower) before you follow hairpin turns down to the main road.
