Fjord Mountain Route is a brand by JVB Travel, a tour operator based in Fagernes, in the heart of the Valdres region — just south of Jotunheimen National Park. JVB Travel is a subsidiary of JVB – Jotunheimen og Valdresruten Bilselskap, a transport company with more than 100 years of history in the region. Since 1919, JVB has connected people, villages, valleys, mountains and fjords through public transport, local knowledge and a deep understanding of Norwegian travel logistics. Our Roots: The History of JVB
The story behind Fjord Mountain Route begins long before modern tourism. It begins with local roads, mountain passes, boats, buses and people who knew how important it was to connect remote communities with the rest of Norway.
JVB Timeline
1909–1910 – The beginning of motor transport in Valdres
The early history of JVB can be traced back to the first local motor routes from Fagernes towards Tyin and Lærdal. By the summer of 1910, several local companies operated buses from Fagernes. (Wikipedia)
1919 – JVB is founded
On 21 November 1919, A/S Jotunheimen and A/S Valdresruten were formally merged at Fagernes Hotel. This became the start of A/S Jotunheimen og Valdresruten Bilselskap — known today as JVB. (Jotunheimen og Valdresruten Bilselskap)
1944 – M/B Bitihorn becomes part of JVB
The historic boat M/B Bitihorn on Lake Bygdin became part of JVB’s travel and transport history, connecting mountain travellers with some of the most iconic areas in Jotunheimen. (Wikipedia)
1950s – Connecting east and west
JVB developed routes and transport services across Valdres and towards Western Norway, strengthening the connection between Oslo, Valdres, the mountains and the fjords.
2018 – JVB Travel was founded
As a subsidiary of its mother company JVB, JVB Travel was founded to make bus and boat transport part of exciting travel packages for guests from all over the world. Originally limited to Jotunheimen and the local Valdres area, JVB Travel now offers hiking, cycling and skiing trips in many places in Southern Norway.
Today – More than transport
Today, JVB operates scheduled buses, tour buses, tracked snow vehicles, M/B Bitihorn, workshops, transport services and travel experiences through its subsidiary Jotunheimen Travel.
Fjord Mountain Route – A new chapter
Fjord Mountain Route builds on this heritage. We combine transport, local expertise, accommodation, activities and personal service into journeys that connect fjords and mountains in a more sustainable way.
Our main office is in Fagernes, the centre of the Valdres region. From here, we are surrounded by mountains, valleys, local communities and travel routes that have shaped our company for generations.
Behind Fjord Mountain Route is a team working from different places along the route — from Oslo to Bergen, from Fagernes and Tyinkrysset, and from the valleys to the fjords. Our team includes both Norwegians and international colleagues, young professionals and experienced local experts. Together, we bring a wide range of knowledge, languages, backgrounds and personal travel experience into every journey we create.
Some of us know the bus routes by heart. Some know the hiking trails, hotels and villages. Some know the booking systems, logistics and small details that make a journey run smoothly. What we all have in common is a love for this region and a wish to share it in a genuine way.
