At Fjord Mountain Route, we believe that travel can be more than a personal experience. When done responsibly, it can also create value for local communities, support small businesses and help protect the landscapes we all come to enjoy.

We also know that staying at home would create fewer emissions than travelling. But for many of us, travel is an important part of life. It connects people, cultures and places. Our goal is therefore not to pretend that travel has no impact, but to be honest about that impact — and to be part of the solution.

Travelife Certified

Fjord Mountain Route is a brand by JVB Travel, which is Travelife Certified. Travelife is an internationally recognised certification for sustainable tourism companies. It requires long-term, structured work across many parts of the business, including management, communication, suppliers, environmental impact, customer information and local cooperation.

For us, this certification is not a one-time achievement. It is a framework that helps us improve continuously and make tourism in our region as sustainable as possible. It takes time and effort, but we believe it is necessary.

Carbon Offsetting and Emission Compensation

An important part of our sustainability work is carbon offsetting. Since January 2025, we have been actively compensating our greenhouse gas emissions as part of our commitment to more responsible tourism.

We know that compensation is not the final solution. Reducing emissions must always come first. Still, compensation is one of the best tools available to us today while we continue working with our partners and suppliers to reduce the actual footprint of our trips.

On a regular basis, we calculate our greenhouse gas emissions with the help of Carmacal, a tool used by Travelife to calculate the carbon footprint of travel and holiday packages.

The calculation includes:
  • Business trips made by our employees
  • The carbon footprint of our sold travel packages
  • Emissions from our office operations

Our compensation is made through donations to Atmosfair, supporting climate projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Our long-term goal is clear: we want to work directly with our suppliers, partners and transport providers so that, in the future, there is as little as possible left to compensate.

How We Work with Sustainability

Sustainability is not one single action. It is part of how we design, sell and operate our journeys along the Fjord Mountain Route.

We focus on using public transport wherever possible, including buses, trains and boats. This allows our guests to explore the region without needing a private car and helps reduce the overall footprint of the journey.

We work closely with local accommodation providers, activity companies, guides and transport partners. By doing so, more of the value created by tourism stays in the region. This supports local jobs, local food traditions and year-round development in small communities between Oslo and Bergen.

We also aim to create travel experiences that encourage guests to stay longer, travel slower and experience more. Instead of rushing from one highlight to the next, we want travellers to discover the people, villages, landscapes and stories along the route.

Protecting What Makes This Region Special

The Fjord Mountain Route passes through some of Norway’s most beautiful and vulnerable landscapes: fjords, mountain valleys, national parks, historic villages and traditional farming areas. These places are not only scenic backdrops. They are living communities and natural environments that need respect and care.

That is why we encourage responsible behaviour throughout the journey. We inform our guests about local customs, nature protection, waste reduction and how to travel with care in mountain and fjord landscapes.

Our ambition is simple: the places we visit should not be worse off because tourism exists. Ideally, tourism should help protect them.

A Continuous Journey

We cannot change the world alone. But we can take responsibility for the part we play.

At Fjord Mountain Route, sustainability is an ongoing journey. We will continue improving our products, working with our partners, reducing emissions where possible and being transparent about the challenges of travel.

We believe that the future of tourism must be more local, more conscious and more respectful. That is the direction we are working towards — one journey at a time.
